Copyrighting is absolutely 100% necessary once you’ve finished a song and are satisfied with it. It’s peace of mind knowing bands won’t come stealing your songs and taking the credit for them without getting some just desserts.
Some people believe that by simply mailing yourself a copy of your lyrics will be enough to constitute a copyright. This method is often called “The poor mans copyright”.
